What’s Your Reason for Writing?

March 16, 2013 By Tabitha Leave a Comment

Pink
I love Pink and everything she stand for.

I was watching P!nk on TV last night and was overcome with how bloody brilliant she is, not only as a songwriter, but as a person.

I’ve always liked her music. Her stories that permeate passion and angst (depending on the song) and how she can say something I’m feeling and make it come alive with such beautiful lyrics and music.

So yeah, I love her. 😉

But also I love what she represents. She stands up for her beliefs, isn’t afraid to tell someone if they are doing something crappy.

It got me thinking about my reason for writing.

Obviously the bare bones is that I love writing and want to share that others, but I think there is more to that as well. It’s not only about me, but about the reader, too. I want to explore what women are capable of, not just as a sex object for men (blech), but to explore their own fantasies, dreams and fears.

The Desperately Delicious stories were all about exploring different fantasies. They aren’t just erotica though, they have a story. I saw one review that said they were too PG-13. So yeah. I would agree with that (All Tied Up might be pushing it though).

There was another review that said Stranger Delight was about rape. Um no. Sure she has sex with a stranger (a common fantasy), but not once is she forced to do anything against her will. OF COURSE this wouldn’t happen in real life. That’s why it’s fiction — you can explore fantasies through the safety of words. That’s the point.

(Yeah, expect that I will read my reviews 😉 )

Anyway, back to my point. I’m currently writing the second Feathered book, and it struck me that this series is about much more than just a fun romp with a guy with wings. There is a deeper issue — one about society’s pressure to be with one sort of person, when your heart lie’s with another. This isn’t just about race, but also about gender, reputation, and so on.

Every day I see news reports about couples wanting to be together, but society telling them it’s wrong.

Really? Love is wrong?

I don’t understand it.

So in my way, The Feathered Lover (and the rest of the Feathered series) is really about fighting that pressure that says you can’t be together. It’s about fighting for your right to be with the person you love.

And in my view, that’s never wrong.

The Next Feathered Book

March 9, 2013 By Tabitha Leave a Comment

Perhaps I shouldn't write in green pen?
BRAINSTORMING IDEAS – Perhaps I shouldn’t write in green pen?

Since Feathered Lover was published last month, I’ve been wracking my brain over what story to write next.

I always said that if there was enough interest in Feathered that I’d love to write a sequel and explore Zan’s world further. But I can’t wait — I want to write it, right now. 🙂

So that’s what I’m doing. The ideas keep coming too, and I’ve got an idea for a possible third book as well.

I’ve started brainstorming story ideas and writing them down in my journal so the process is underway.

I expect that I could get it out around June although since I haven’t actually started writing yet, I’m not actually sure of dates. But it should be around then, give or take a month.

I do know what the cover will be though (but not the title yet), because my cover designer had done different mockups for Feathered, that I nearly chose (and was disappointed I couldn’t have more than one cover) but now I’ll be able to use for Book 2 – yah, win!

My goal for the story is to explore Ruby & Zan’s relationship further and also give Zan a bigger role in the book (in the first he was really just Ruby’s love interest, but now he deserves equal billing as he’s an equal partner in the relationship).

Obviously it makes sense that they are both going to fight for the rights to be accepted in society as well as experience some of their own relationship troubles (come on, it can’t be happy happy the whole book – we need some drama – lol).

I’ll also include a few new characters, as well as keeping most of the old ones too.

I’m so excited  to delve further in the world of the Volante and see more of the mysterious race.

Happy reading!

The Feathered Lover is Now Available

February 28, 2013 By Tabitha Leave a Comment

The Feathered Lover is LIVE – YAY!!

It’s now up at Amazon & Kobo.

It should also be live at Apple iTunes and Barnes & Noble in a few weeks (I can’t go direct with them, so it takes longer).

Of course now I’m having author jitters. Is it good enough? What if I uploaded the wrong file? Perhaps there isn’t enough sex in it? Does any one care? *writerly angst*

I think I’ll take a nap, so I can start breathing again.

Hope you like it!

The Feathered Lover (probably) Will Be Published At The End Of This Month

The Feathered Lover by Tabitha Levin. Due March 2013.

I’ve finished the third (and hopefully final) draft and now the manuscript has been sent to my copy editor. She fixes up all my sloppy grammar and typos so I can publish a clean book for you. 😉

I can probably tell you a bit more about it now. The working title is The Feathered Lover.

I haven’t written a blurb yet, but a quick summary:

Set in 1943. Ruby Kelly spies three men who have captured one of the illegal Volante (men with wings). Unable to get the scene out of her mind, she creeps to where it is being held.

When the men find out she has seen it and confront her, the police are called and she has to free the Volante before it’s found by the law. After her father is arrested, she must hide from both the police and the men trying to get the Volante back.

And she kinda thinks the Volante’s hot (and yes the feeling is mutual). So of course, there are sex scenes. Four of them in fact 😉

Paranormal romance, with a man with wings. Set in sexy 1943. I love fiction.

The Novel Has Started Second Draft Stage

January 4, 2013 By Tabitha Leave a Comment

second-draftThe romance novel that I started in November, is now ready to enter second draft stage.  That means I get to go through all the raw and wonderful (and not so wonderful) words that I wrote and shape them into something resembling a book.

I like this stage because you begin to see how good your story can be.  Sure there will still be scenes I need to cut, more scenes I need to write, and others I’ll be scratching my head over wondering what on earth I can do to fix it, but overall I find this part exciting, as its potential is starting to shine through.

I haven’t touched the story since I did the first draft in November so it’ll be interesting to get stuck back in today and see what needs to be done.  From memory, I know that the sex scenes will need some work, the ending is a bit flat (so I’ll need to spice it up), and I want to develop the male love interest further, but overall I really like this story.

I don’t know when it’ll be finished.  Certainly not this month.  I’m going to try to aim for March but if I can get stuck in (and the kids give me ample time to write, even though that’s unlikely since it’s school holidays) then it’s possible that I could get it done by the end of February.  We’ll see.

What’s it about? I’m sure I’ve told you already haven’t I? I haven’t? Oh dear.  I really need to stop being so coy.  wing wink.  (deliberate spelling mistake, hehe, shhhh).

NaNoWriMo – And We Are Done

November 30, 2012 By Tabitha Leave a Comment

November was a busy month for me, tippety typing a novel in just 30 days.  Well to be honest, it was typing 50,000 words in 30 days, which I did.  A novel – I don’t exactly have yet.

It was a fun experience, and I’m glad to have participated (and won) the month, but my novel still needs quite a bit more work (and words) before I can publish for all the world to see.

My goal is to start fixing it up in January and have it to my editor by mid February (or earlier if I can managed it.)  If all goes well, it will probably be ready for sale by March 2013.  That’s the aim anyway.

I had set out to write an erotic romance, but in the end the erotic parts became few and far between, and it turned into a regular ol’ romance with a few steamy sex scenes.  A completely different direction than I was originally going.

It’s still set in the 1940’s, and still has fantasy elements.  But now the direction I’ve gone has made it a stronger novel with a better plot, and so I’m happy with my choice to cut back on the sex.

I can’t wait to get my first novel out there for you all to read.  I’m really excited about it.

I’ll keep you updated on its progress.

All the best,

Tabs xx
